The design of Aveda Fredric’s Institute Indianapolis began and ended with the environment and its inhabitants in mind. The design teams were given the task throughout the entire design process of seeking out materials that are eco-friendly and friendly to the end-user of the space. Whether their selections were made from recycled materials, or are recyclable or manufactured in an environmental way with environmentally friendly, sustainable materials, they were challenged to create a difference. Taking the selections one step further, much thought has been given to the psychology of color and the way it can enhance the space for the guests, students and instructors alike. Color was added through the use of varying materials, textures and applications though the flooring, paint, cabinetry, wall materials and fixtures.

STAINLESS STEEL

The name originates from the fact that stainless steel does not stain, corrode or rust as easily as ordinary steel

  • Stainless steel is 100% recyclable. In fact, over 50% of new stainless steel is made from remelted scrap metal, rendering it an eco-friendly material.

  • Stainless Steel is the fourth common material used in metal wall tiles, and is used for its corrosion resistance properties in kitchens and bathrooms.

CORK

Cork comes from the bark of the cork oak tree and is a renewable and sustainable resource, making it ideal in terms of the ever increasing demand for conservation of natural resources.

  • In cork oak plantations the first cork bark will not be harvested from a tree until it is 25-30 years old, as only then it is considered a fully grown tree.

  • The tree is not damaged and the bark re-grows completely, taking on a smoother texture after each harvest.

  • Harvesting only occurs once every nine years and a cork oak can live for 150-200 years, so it can be safely harvested up to 20 times during its life cycle. It is a truly inexhaustible and natural resource.

YEMM + HART ORGINS

The origins of this product are colorful post-consumer detergent bottles. Unlike plastic laminate products whose printed patterns are repeated, the randomness of this material’s color at the surface is real and unique.

  • It is a completely safe, non-toxic material that causes no harm to the environment during its manufacture or use and it helps to minimize waste.

  • The creation of Origins is an involved process. First, plastic bottles must be collected, sorted by color and shredded into pieces about the size of oatmeal. Then the flakes must be washed in hot water to remove contaminates such as soap, milk and paper labels and then thoroughly dried.
